Alliance AutoGas (AAG) Asheville, NC, has introduced a new propane port fuel direct injection (P-PFDI) conversion system for the 2018 Ford F-150 with either a 3.3-liter, V-6 or 5.0- liter, V-8 engine. The system, which relies on Ford’s new dual-injection, continues to utilize the in-cylinder injectors to provide gasoline as a combustion lubricant while using the port injectors to supply propane autogas.
“Propane autogas is the most popular alternative fuel worldwide, proven in more than 28 million vehicles,” said Ed Hoffman, president of Alliance AutoGas’s parent company, Blossman Services (Ocean Springs, Miss.). He adds that is thanks to the fuel’s low cost, easy implementation, and suitable combustion characteristics. Beyond that, autogas also burns cleaner than conventional gasoline. Alliance AutoGas says its new P-PFDI system puts the Ford F-150 3.3-liter engine in the same emissions class as the Hyundai Elantra and Subaru Outback, while the 5.0-liter is in a class with the Chevrolet Volt and Toyota Yaris.
Alliance AutoGas adds that the P-PFDI system performs well in extreme weather conditions, with no cold-start issues and no hot-weather complications. The Alliance AutoGas nationwide network offers system conversions to P-PFDI with a five-year, 100,000-mile warranty.
In the future, Alliance says it will have more vehicles certified to the system as dual injection continues to gain ground in the commercial vehicle segment. Stephen Holland, director of engineering at Blossman Services, explained that his team noticed a major shift in OEM technology several years ago as manufacturers began to implement port fuel direct injection (PFDI) engines in small cars. “PFDI is a fairly complicated technology, and we knew it was only a matter of time before it became widespread, including implementation into big trucks. It was important for us to begin engineering an autogas solution quickly. We were prepared with a conversion system as soon as Ford introduced the first PFDI commercial truck. We know that PFDI will continue to grow, and we will be ready for the next class of vehicles as they come to market.”
