South Portland, Maine (May 4, 2022) — Dead River Company, a home heating provider north of Boston, Massachusetts, has announced another acquisition, one that expands the company further into central and western Massachusetts. Dead River Company has acquired Whiting Oil Corporation, which does business as Whiting Energy Fuels.

The sale, which closed in April, marks a transition of Whiting Energy Fuels to Dead River Company, after five generations of family ownership.  Whiting was founded in 1870 in Holyoke, Massachusetts, as a horse-drawn coal delivery business. Owner and President Rick Whiting, who is planning to retire, carefully selected Dead River Company as it is, “best suited to continue the excellence that Whiting Oil has represented over the years, and because Dead River is committed to our employees and customers,” he said.

Dead River Company President and CEO Deanna Sherman said, “We’re honored Rick chose us to carry on the Whiting legacy of customer service and community pride, and we look forward to serving the Springfield/Northampton area of Massachusetts. He has a first-rate team and we’re glad they will all be staying on to become part of the Dead River family.”  Dead River Company operates in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine.

The Whiting Energy offices in Northampton and Dalton will now operate as Dead River Company.
