After 56 years at White River Distributors, a veteran employee looks back on his career and looks forward to retirement filled with fishing, travel and family time

How many years have you been working for White River Distributors?
Fifty-six years.

Can you give a brief description of how your role has changed over the years?
I started working at White River Distributors as a fabricator and painter. Then, I moved to shop foreman, then sales and general manager. I am now semi-retired and a consultant.

Looking back over your time with this company, what have you most appreciated?
Being treated like family and having the opportunity of meeting people all across the United States. All the friends I have made in the propane industry.

Congratulations on nearing retirement! Do you have any plans you are looking forward to after you retire?
Travel, fish, hunt and spend time with my great-grandson.

What advice do you have for someone coming into the industry?
Get involved and join your state and national associations.

What is the biggest challenge the industry is facing right now?
Government regulations and decisions being made on the state and federal levels regarding electric vehicles. This will have an effect on the chassis we use in production.

What is the most important lesson you have learned from a mentor/manager?
Be honest and truthful.

Whom do you admire in the industry?
My first boss, Preston Grace. Others include Sam McTier, Milford Therrell and too many others to mention!

Describe some of the biggest professional challenges you’ve experienced over your career.
Chassis and steel shortages; hazmat regulations requiring shutdowns on LP bobtails and transports.

How do you hope to see the industry grow or change for the better in the coming years?
I would like to see the younger generation get involved and see the propane industry as a career.

Which historical figure would you most like to meet?
Walt Disney.

What’s a skill you’d like to improve on?
Fishing.
