The United States Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates an average of about 99 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas will be consumed in the United States during the first quarter of this year — the least for any first quarter since 2018. This year, January and February are likely to be among the warmest on record, which led to significantly lower heating demand and, therefore, lower natural gas consumption.

The Baker Hughes United States rig count is down seven from last week to 753, with oil rigs down seven to 600, gas rigs unchanged at 151, and miscellaneous rigs unchanged at two.
The U.S. rig count is up 103 rigs from last year's count of 650 with oil rigs up 78, gas rigs up 24, and miscellaneous up one. The U.S. offshore rig count is unchanged at 17, up five year over year.

Canada's primary underground propane inventories decreased by 30.22% in February, according to the Canada Energy Regulator. The total, 1064.2 Mcm, represented a month-to-month decrease of 460.8 Mcm. Compared to a year earlier, stocks were higher, with 6.2 Mcm, or 0.59%, more product on hand.

During the latest mid-month period, prices at Mont Belvieu, Texas, decreased as we hit the mid-winter. The posted prices decreased 6.417 cents/gal, from January mid-month to February mid-month while the spot prices decreased 6.875 cents. Conway, Kan., postings ended with a 10.5-cent decrease and spots decreased 10.25 cents over the month.

The United States Energy Information Administration (EIA) expects natural gas prices at the Henry Hub to average around $3.40 per million British thermal units in 2023, 47% lower than in 2022. According to EIA’s February "Short-Term Energy Outlook" (STEO), a warmer-than-normal start to the year has reduced natural gas consumption to below average.

Industry leaders from across the region gathered in January for a Midwest Propane Summit, held at Big Cedar Lodge in Ridgedale, Missouri. The event brought together more than 30 representatives from state associations, propane marketers and industry suppliers. The attendees came from Arkansas, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma to discuss opportunities, challenges and best practices. Joining the event as participants were Tucker Perkins, president and CEO of PERC, and Stuart Weidie, PERC chairman.
