As sales of the propane autogas S2G truck continue to grow among its initial market of propane distributors, Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp. (Gaffney, S.C.) is demonstrating new applications for the truck with the sale of its first medium-duty dry van, also known as a box truck, for a specialty manufacturer in California.

RH Peterson, a manufacturer of specialty fireplaces and outdoor grills based in City of Industry, Calif., took delivery of the first box truck version of the S2G late in 2014, using the truck for product delivery throughout Southern California. RH Peterson developed and added product-branding graphics to the box portion. “We are very pleased with the truck—it has already become a very valuable part of our fleet,” said Dominique Seim, senior managing partner with RH Peterson. “It offers us an outstanding combination of power, fuel efficiency, and cost-effectiveness, and our drivers are very complimentary of the overall driving experience. They love the way the truck drives and handles. We’re excited about adding additional trucks to our fleet in the near future.”

Freightliner Custom Chassis debuted the S2G in 2013 as a prototype and began full production at last year’s Work Truck Show with an initial focus on marketing the vehicle to the propane delivery segment, where it received strong interest and heavy initial orders. The company showcased an S2G unit outfitted with a flatbed and crane at the Work Truck Show to demonstrate the unit’s application versatility. “We are very excited to see the growth of the S2G into additional applications,” said Mike Stark, product manager for Freightliner. “We’ve believed all along that other applications and industries would be just as excited about the S2G and its unique benefits as propane distributors have been, so it’s inspiring to see that vision starting to become reality.”

The S2G is powered by an 8.0-liter engine with a factory-installed CleanFUEL USA liquid propane system. The power plant generates 339 hp at 4100 rpm and 495 ft-lb torque at 3100 rpm. The truck’s 30% larger windshield is combined with a sloped hood to provide improved line of sight of 8 feet. The chassis comes with a three-year/50,000-mile warranty with towing and roadside assistance and 24/7 factory-direct customer support. Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp. is a subsidiary of Daimler Trucks North America, a Daimler company.
