The World LPG Association’s World Forum’s Global Technology Conference (GTC) is known for featuring the latest innovations in the use of propane, and this year’s conference is no exception. The World Forum takes place Sept. 29 to Oct. 2, and during GTC on Sept. 29, Mark Walls of the Southwest Research Institute will be announced as the 2015 WLPGA Innovation Award winner. The award is for his paper, “Direct Liquid Propane Injection on a Modern GDI Engine.”

Walls wrote that the objective of his paper was to “determine the feasibility of running a modern turbocharged gasoline direct injected engine on propane with the OEM calibrations and hardware.”|

Anne Feudner of Kohler Power Systems, with her paper, “Application of Propane to the Mobile Rental Generator Market--Innovations and Challenges,” was the runner up for the award. Feudner explains that a mobile generator is a generator mounted on a trailer and that rental companies are the biggest purchasers of mobile generators. But historically the mobile generator market has been dominated by diesel generators. Her paper describes a project to develop 30- , 50- , 70- and 125-kVA propane powered mobile generators.

Sixteen abstracts from 11 different countries were submitted to the GTC selection committee for GTC 2015. The committee selected 10 papers to be presented at the conference. BPN highlighted the 10 papers in its August issue, and the article is available at www.bpnews.com.

“The WLPGA is very pleased to be associated with the promotion of technical innovation,” said David Tyler, WLPGA director. “It is one of our key mission statements. This year the selection committee for the WLPGA Innovation Award [has] chosen two papers that focus on the application of LPG in engines, and interestingly both the winner and runner up are from the U.S.” GTC, he added, “features some more very interesting technology across the whole LPG value chain.”
