The Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) is soliciting comments on a proposed initiative that would provide $2 million in funding for forklift propane engine development. Under Docket 20465, Power Solutions International (PSI; Wood Dale, Ill.) would develop and commercialize an advanced propane engine as a replacement to the Tier 4 diesel and electric models in the 3- to 6-ton fork truck market. PSI would contribute $3 million toward the $5-million project.

PERC notes that many of today’s LP engine offerings are a result of conversion of an original OEM gasoline or diesel engine. As a result, OEM quality and reliability may be compromised, or pricing may be higher than a purpose-designed and -built engine. The lack of an optimized solution has allowed electric and diesel engines to gain market share relative to propane.

In addition, the popular General Motors 3.0-liter engine will no longer be produced at the end of this year, leaving lift truck OEMs scrambling to evaluate new powertrain options. This creates an opening in the 3- to 6-ton fork truck market for new propane powertrains. At the smaller than 3-ton market, electric systems have made inroads to replace spark- and compression-ignited engines. PSI’s propane engine would fill this gap and extend its existing 4.3 and 8.8 LP product offering with the same controls and service platform. PERC adds that the forklift market is a core market for propane, vitally important for base year-round gallon demand.

The council is required to seek comments before approving any proposed project costing $1.5 million or more. Comments on the funding request must be received by 5 p.m. EST April 8. Comments may be sent to PERC, Public Comment on Funding Request, 1140 Connecticut Avenue NW, Suite 1075, Washington, D.C. 20036; by fax to 202/452-9054; or by email to This email address is being protected from spambots.
