(September 23, 2019) — As Atlantic Canada grappled with the effects of heavy rainfall and power outages in early September, the Canadian Propane Association (CPA) and propane retailers encouraged Canadians to take safety precautions and issued flood safety tips for propane users to keep themselves safe during difficult weather conditions.
CPA’s flood safety tips included preparing for a flood when warnings are broadcast, as well as what to do after flooding has occurred and when it is safe to return home. “The CPA’s flood safety tips will help homeowners take the necessary measures to ensure that they and their families are protected and kept safe during these extreme weather conditions,” said Nathalie St-Pierre, CPA president and CEO. “Floods can have serious effects on the structure of a home, so it is important to take precautions and follow the CPA’s simple safety measures.”
The association notes that propane is among the safest fuels available. It is non-toxic and dissipates quickly if released, but it is important to always be cautious when floods occur. Some essential steps to take when a flood warning is issued include ensuring propane tanks are secured to a fixed object and shutting off the gas supply to appliances. Electricity should also be shut off. Most importantly, do not turn the propane, or electricity, supply back on until all water has been removed and a certified technician has inspected and/or repaired the entire system.
