  • New LPG Marine Engine Technology Tested By MAN Energy and Alfa Laval

In partnership with MAN Energy Solutions (Augsburg, Germany), Alfa Laval’s (Lund, Sweden) LPG fuel-conditioning module has undergone successful tests with the first two-stroke, high-pressure marine engine to use LPG as fuel—and has been evaluated for use with ammonia. The companies observe that the competitiveness of LPG as a fuel is increasing. Not only does LPG virtually eliminate sulfur emissions, it has a lower cost than many other fuels and is readily available worldwide. For those reasons and others, MAN Energy Solutions has developed the new LPG-fueled MAN B&W ME-LGIP marine engine. Alfa Laval, having successfully provided fuel boosters for the first methanol-fueled chemical tankers, was selected as the partner to develop, supply, and test the engine’s low-flashpoint fuel supply system. “Given our previous work with…

  • Improved Technology Allows Propane Owners to Work Remotely

When Michelle Bruno, owner of Cleburne Propane LLC (Granbury, Texas), discussed remote business operations with her 81-year-old father recently, he commented that the fax machine back in the ’90s allowed him to have three houses in three different states and still run his chemical business. “Even now, he uses a fax and cell phone to stay in touch with his staff. I told him he is in the dark ages. I’m on my laptop working remotely, especially in the slow summer season,” Bruno said. “I live on my family ranch in Weatherford, Texas, and my commute to my office, should I choose to accept it, is about 40 minutes each way. I also travel for vacations a few times a year. Don’t get me wrong,…

  • Propane Industry Improves Customer Fueling Experience Through New Technology

As propane vehicle technology becomes more advanced, propane dispensing infrastructure has evolved along with it. In particular, the propane industry is focusing much of its attention on enhancing the customer fueling experience by installing propane dispensers that are dedicated for vehicle fueling, and by upgrading the propane nozzle technology. The increasingly popular European-style, quick-connect nozzle simplifies the customer fueling experience by connecting to the fuel tank through a snap or quick-connect attachment, rather than a conventional threaded connection. Only after the nozzle is safely connected to the fuel tank will it begin to dispense fuel. This attachment eliminates the threading connection necessary with the conventional Acme nozzle, making propane fueling as easy as conventional gasoline fueling. With the new nozzle, fueling can be completed using…

  • Technology Update 2016

Technology is constantly advancing. New, improved, and innovative products provide benefits for marketers to ensure that businesses are run in the most productive and efficient manner. TANK MONITORS: SKYBITZ offers wireless remote tank monitoring, asset tracking, and data reporting through a single-source combination of telemetry hardware, sensors, and software application that continuously delivers tank data. Utilizing this information will help to eliminate product run-outs and improve route scheduling. The monitor provides information from tanks in the yard or hundreds of miles away. SkyBitz, formerly known as TankLink, has recently introduced a new managed services program that enables its customers to pay a single monthly fee instead of purchasing the equipment upfront. The users can set up the SMARTank Level and Analytics portal to give location…

  • Technology Used for the Best Delivery and Supply Outcomes

By David Kidd… As the propane industry continues to expand and evolve, the technology designed to enable better information gathering and customer service follows suit. In this rapidly transforming environment, propane delivery companies are starting to adapt in an effort to better serve their customers and provide products in a more effective and trackable way. Technical advances are made each year to accommodate the evolution of the propane industry. New top-notch technologies continue to surface, with many providing user-friendly interfaces. Staying on top of demand in today’s distribution chain is challenging. Stock-outs can be costly and lead to lost business. In addition, transportation expenses and delivery logistics can be hard to manage, particularly around emergency deliveries. Monitors on tanks can be inconsistent and unreliable, with…

  • Autogas Village to Highlight World’s LPG Vehicle Technology

The combined 29th World LPG Forum and 2016 AEGPL Congress in Florence is set to showcase autogas technology and vehicles from around the globe at the Autogas Village exhibit. Italy, one of Europe’s major and growing autogas markets, is home to several autogas engine and conversion equipment manufacturers and numerous distribution companies. For those who follow road racing challenges, and as reported by the World LPG Association (WLPGA), the third round of the 2016 edition of the Green Hybrid Cup—a racing series featuring hybrid Kia Vengas with engines fueled exclusively by LPG—recently took place in Ascoli Piceno, Italy. The round was part of Coppa Paolino Teodori, an installment of the Italian Mountain Racing Championships. As noted by AEGPL, the European LPG Association, autogas is the…

  • New Technology Makes Autogas Tank Evacuation Safe and Easy

In David Kennedy’s career of working on propane autogas vehicles, he has experienced the difficulties involved when a valve or other component inside a vehicle’s propane tank fails. “Getting into the tank and actually working on the component takes a major effort,” said Kennedy, who is director of autogas design for Blossman Gas (Swannanoa, N.C.). From the start, he wanted to provide something so that employees could safely work on those propane tanks. Kennedy and his team at Blossman believe they have found the answer to the problem. In July, the company released what it is calling the Autogas LPG Evacuation Pump, which it says can evacuate an OEM LPI vehicle tank, equipped with a fuel pump, filled with 44 useable gallons, to 0 PSI…

  • The New Normal: Technology Can Make Or Break Your Propane Delivery Business

By Bill Stomp… A message to owners of propane delivery businesses throughout Canada and the United States: Never has there been a more exciting time, and never has there been a more anxious occasion, in the history of this industry. Why? Because technology now makes it much easier for competitors to enter each other’s respective territories, but that same technology enables companies to strengthen their relationships with existing clients. This technology allows a propane delivery business to create a very detailed database in less than a year concerning the residential and commercial clients that a nearby competitor may currently serve. Building this resource for a minimal expense, compared to the costlier and more tedious methods of the past, means two things. First, it disrupts regional…

  • Tier 4 Regulations, New Technology Make Propane an Excellent Fuel Source For Irrigation Engines

By Brooke Behrendt . . . Over the past decade, Tier 4 emissions regulations mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have had a significant impact on the agricultural and propane industries. These regulations require that emissions of particulate matter (PM) or oxides of nitrogen (NOx) from non-road diesel engines, such as irrigation engines, be reduced by 90%. To abide by these new requirements, agriculture producers and equipment manufacturers are taking steps to upgrade their irrigation engines. One way to improve emissions is to switch from engines fueled by diesel to those powered by propane. While diesel has long been the fuel of choice for many farmers, increasingly strict emissions regulations and new propane equipment technology are making propane-powered engines a more cost-effective, convenient, and…

  • Ford Transit 3.7L Bi-Fuel Autogas System with “Plug and Play” Technology Achieves EPA Certification

Alliance Autogas has obtained the first EPA certification for the new Ford Transit. “Our order queue has been off the charts even when the certification was pending,” notes Ed Hoffman, president of Blossman Services. “The Ford Transit 3.7L Bi-Fuel autogas system conversion by far and away, is Alliances’ largest and most popular platform yet. The number of conversion requests exponentially exceed all prior platform conversion requests we’ve ever seen,” said Hoffman. The Bi-Fuel system conversion on the Transit is precedent-setting in that no intake manifold drilling, cutting, or splicing of wiring is required. The Ford Transit is the first engine to employ the “Plug and Play” technology, reducing installation time in half, and ensuring consistent performance. Significant fuel cost savings of 35 percent or more…
