  • Women In Propane: From Newspaper Marketing to the Propane Industry

(December 5, 2019) — After six years as the marketing assistant for Proulx Oil & Propane in Newmarket, N.H., Maribeth Girard is a relative newbie to the propane industry. Her extensive marketing background, however, has laid a strong foundation for a successful new career and helped raise Proulx’s marketing initiatives to a new level. “I was a newspaper marketer for close to 20 years, and had to constantly be focusing on new business, retaining customers, and being out in front of what was quickly becoming a very different and declining industry. The challenges I faced in that industry forced me to think differently on how to market products,” Girard said. “With the internet, apps, social media, and Google, the landscape has changed dramatically, as well…

Samantha “Sam” Bassett, a service technician at Superior Energy in Vernon, Conn., often receives surprised looks from customers when they open their doors to find a 24-year-old woman showing up to install or fix a gas appliance, equipment, or line. “It’s not that they’re disrespectful, but when they open the door and see me with heavy, industrial equipment, they second-guess me a lot. I get a lot of second guesses,” she said. Female service technicians are the minority, but they are even rarer in the propane industry. “I’ve yet to come across another female technician. A lot of people at the supply house talk, and they don’t know any other woman doing what I’m doing,” she said. “I think it’s actually pretty cool I’m the…

(July 8, 2019) — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued its final Affordable Clean Energy (ACE) rule, replacing the previous administration’s “overreaching” Clean Power Plan with a regulation it says restores the rule of law and empowers states to continue to reduce emissions while providing affordable and reliable energy for all Americans. The June 19 action was the culmination of a review of the Obama administration’s Clean Power Plan (CPP), which was done in response to President Donald Trump’s Executive Order 13873—Promoting Energy Independence and Economic Growth. The move also follows challenges from a large number of states, trade associations, rural electric cooperatives, and labor unions, who argued the CPP exceeded EPA’s authority under the Clean Air Act. Writing of a new final…

  • Women In Propane: How A Passion For Horses Led To A Career In Propane

Growing the liquefied petroleum (LP) transportation sector of a national insurance company was not Michelle Ceschan’s career goal when she graduated from Robert Morris University 15 years ago with a degree in communications and a passion for horses. She knew nothing about insurance or propane distribution. Growing up with horses, cattle, sheep, and cats in a rural community in Ohio, Ceschan, now a business development specialist for propane operations at National Interstate Insurance Co., did know hard work and responsibility. Taking care of the animals before and after school was part of her daily routine. She began riding horses at age 2 and was involved in 4H along with her brother.
