  • Propane’s Night at the Museum

On September 10, 2016, some 120 propane industry members gathered at the National Museum of Industrial History (NMIH) in Bethlehem, Pa. to celebrate the newly-opened propane exhibit housed at the site that was formerly part of the Bethlehem Steel facility. The mill area, now in disrepair, has an 18,000-sq-ft structure that stands out from the rest—a completely renovated and repurposed modern building that features four galleries dedicated to the preservation of artifacts of the industries that have made America strong. Each gallery is devoted to either the propane, iron and steel, machinery, or silk industry, and more than 200 artifacts are on display that provide a wealth of information for current and future generations, who can observe the rich history of American industry. Reinforcing that,…

  • London Autogas Taxi Project Receives Positive Reviews

Early results of an autogas taxi pilot project in London are showing positive results in several areas, including fuel cost, maintenance cost, and environmental benefits. Autogas Ltd. (Sambourne, England), a joint venture between Shell U.K. and Calor Gas, has been in business for 16 years, with a network of LPG refueling pumps selling Calor Gas propane through Shell fuel stations. The company’s website states its mission is to “save motorists from fuel poverty and help us all breathe easier.” Paul Beesley, marketing manager for Autogas Ltd., said businesses and residents in the United Kingdom have been increasingly focused on improving air quality in urban areas. The government, under a program called the Birmingham NOx Reduction Champions Project, provided funding for businesses to use toward air…

  • How Contact with Legislators Can Benefit Propane Companies

A visit from a U.S. Congresswoman to the offices of Ted Johnson Propane (Baldwin Park, Calif.) on Aug. 25 was a great example of how propane marketers’ engagement with their legislators can result in positive attention to the issues that they face in their daily operations. Rep. Grace Napolitano and her field representative Bob Pence met with Ted Johnson Propane owner Julie Johnson and operations manager John Weigel, along with Johnson’s daughter Alexandria Cesena and Western Propane Gas Association president Joy Alafia. Alafia provided educational materials about propane to Rep. Napolitano, and Johnson showed her a copy of the magazine that her company put together in commemoration of Ted Johnson Propane’s 50th anniversary last year, which highlighted “50 Innovative Uses of Propane.” The meeting became…

  • Bakersfield Terminal Crosses Back to Founding Family

Reno, Nev.-based United Pacific Energy, the new owner of Enterprise Products’ former Bakersfield, Calif. LPG rail and truck terminal, sold its first propane loads out of the facility in July. But saying the company is the new owner might not be completely accurate due to the history. The former father-in-law of United Pacific’s owner, David Humphreys, built the terminal to augment his Coast Gas operations in the late 1970s. That gentleman was industry pioneer and innovator Wayne Harlan, and he’s the grandfather of David W. Humphreys, United Pacific owner David Humphreys’ son, who handles wholesale marketing at the family-owned and -operated business. The Bakersfield terminal was sold to Cornerstone Propane in the mid-1990s. Cornerstone, to be renamed Coast Energy Group, then sold it to Enterprise…

Twenty years ago, on October 11, 1996, with the swipe of a pen, President William Jefferson Clinton signed into law legislation authorizing the National Propane Education and Research Council (PERC). This capped an impressive, three-year bipartisan grass-roots effort that made many members of Congress aware of the propane industry for the first time. The Propane Education & Research Council was founded as an industry check-off program with the passage of the Propane Education and Research Act (PERA) in 1996. BPN’s October 2016 issue chronicles PERC’s 20-year history, provides exclusive coverage of the Council’s evolution, and an overview of the various safety, education, and research and development projects that PERC has accomplished over these past two decades.
