  • Propane Window Air Conditioner Unit Reduces Pollution 700% Compared To Standard Refrigerants

(Oak Ridge, TN) November 7, 2017 – Cooling homes and small office spaces could become less costly and more efficient with new early stage technology developed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Researchers designed a window air conditioning unit that uses propane as the refrigerant, cooling the air with 17 percent higher efficiency than the best ENERGY STAR® commercial units. “Propane offers superior thermodynamic properties and creates 700 percent less pollution than standard refrigerants,” said ORNL’s Brian Fricke. “We developed a system that takes advantage of these qualities and reduces global warming potential.” The team’s early-stage technology includes a novel heat exchanger, compressor, and controls that require less propane than similar units used overseas. The team’s laboratory evaluations demonstrate the prototype unit is the first…

  • Alliance AutoGas CEO Lauds Efforts of Alternative Fuel Industry

Stuart Weidie, CEO of Alliance AutoGas, applauded the efforts of the alternative fuel industry at the Sustainable Fleet Technology Conference 2017 in Raleigh, N.C. in October. Weidie singled out for special praise those who are pursuing options with renewable fuels such as solar and wind power, and exhorted the industry to remember the common goal of displacing traditional fuels such as gasoline and oil for the purposes of a cleaner environment, human health, and energy security. He challenged those attending to look past the excitement of vehicle technology innovation and deeper into the source of the power and energy fueling that technology. For example, 60% of grid electricity is generated by coal, a major source of harmful emissions. Consequently, though an electric vehicle itself may…

  • NPGA Meetings in Minneapolis Highlight Industry Challenges, Opportunities

With winter 2017-2018 promising supply tightness, Ferrellgas joining Suburban Propane in withholding dues payments to the National Propane Gas Association (NPGA), and a host of 90-day “criticals” requiring legislative outreach, the association board meeting had no shortage of issues to discuss as members gathered in Minneapolis Oct. 1-3. The topic was primary U.S. inventory 25 MMbbl behind year-ago levels, and the number of people who wanted to discuss it was higher than normal. Extra chairs had to be brought in to accommodate all who wished to join the NPGA Supply and Infrastructure Task Force meeting Oct. 1. The two-hour gathering featured a detailed overview of the U.S. propane supply situation, titled “The Effects of Hurricane Harvey on the U.S. Winter Supply Outlook,” presented by Debnil…

  • Old Farmer’s Almanac Predicts 2018 Winter A Bit More “Normal”

Cold conditions are coming back in 2018, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac 200-year-old weather prediction formula. The Almanc predicts that the 2017-2018 winter will be a bit more “normal” as far as the temperatures are concerned, especially in the eastern and central parts of the U.S., and areas east of the Rocky Mountains – with many locations expected to receive above-normal precipitation. The 2018 Old Farmer’s Almanac is predicting this winter’s forecast will be much colder than last year, but not colder than usual. The Old Farmer’s Almanac, founded in 1792, notes that parts of the northern United States will experience milder-than-average temperatures, while much of the South and West will be cooler than normal. Exceptions include Florida and the Southeast, where the Almanac…

  • FBI Sting Unveils Commercial Driver’s License (CDLs) Scam

(October 30, 2017) — The Sacramento Bee is reporting that an under-cover sting operation has led to bribery charges against two additional California Department of Motor Vehicles employees. The six-year probe by the FBI, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and other federal agencies has resulted in charges against eight individuals so far and the revocation of hundreds of commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) around the state. The latest employees to be charged were named in documents unsealed this month in federal court in Sacramento. The government is alleging they took bribes from Southern California truck driving school owners to alter DMV records to show applicants passed written and driving tests, allowing them to obtain CDLs. The defendants were identified as Lisa Terraciano, 51, who is…

  • Winter Heating Costs Likely Higher than Last 2 Years

Most U.S. households can expect higher heating expenditures this winter—October 2017 through March 2018—than the last two winters, according to the Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) Winter Fuels Outlook. Higher expected winter heating expenditures are the result of both more heating demand because of relatively colder weather and, to a lesser extent, higher fuel prices. EIA’s projections of heating demand are based on the most recent temperature forecasts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). NOAA’s forecast anticipates that winter weather will be 13% colder than last winter and closer to the average of the previous 10 winters. Because weather patterns present great uncertainty to winter energy forecasts, EIA’s Winter Fuels Outlook includes projections for 10% colder and 10% warmer scenarios. In the past 10…

  • PERC Must Adopt a New Approach, Not Just a New Budget

By Steve Ahrens . . . (October 23, 2017) — The propane industry recently celebrated the achievements of the only CEO that the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) has ever known. Roy Willis stepped down after 20 years at the helm, rightly receiving the accolades due him for not only aiding the legislative effort that created the council, but leading it through some turbulent times. We join those throughout the industry in commemorating his contributions and wishing him well in retirement. Now, Tucker Perkins, a former marketer and Roy’s second-in-command at PERC, steps in to lead the organization. Among his first actions will be implementing the council’s FY 2018 budget, currently out for public comment. While the spending document hews closely to previous budgets,…

  • Will the Revolution Continue?

Revolution: A sudden, complete or marked change in something. An apt descriptor to define what has transpired in the propane industry over the last five years is — Revolution. In that time span the United States became the global leader in propane exports, saw domestic demand shift to secondary status, and realized prolific growth in propane production. As with any revolution, two questions typically arise: will these changes continue and what will the impacts be? We have to look at several segments of the propane market in order to get complete answers. “Follow the money” may be the best path forward to understand if the propane export revolution will continue. The graph below highlights the narrow margin currently available on a monthly basis to move product from…
