  • CEO of NPGA To Transition From Position of 24 Years

WASHINGTON (January 29, 2019) — A communication from the National Propane Gas Association (NPGA) signed by association chairman Chris Earhart and Randy Thompson, chairman-elect, reports that NPGA president and CEO Rick Roldan will transition from his leadership position this year. The news emerged following the recent 2019 NPGA Winter Executive Committee meeting. Noted was that Roldan and association officers have been in discussions for the past several months, and there is mutual agreement this is the right time for the change. “Roldan will be employed at NPGA through the remainder of 2019 and is committed to ensuring the seamless transition in leadership,” association leadership said. “We have already begun the search process for his successor.” Noted was that Roldan has been associated with NPGA for…

  • WLPGA’s Cooking For Life Campaign Opens Life-Saving Community Kitchen in Myanmar

Steve McBride, COO of Parami Energy, was attending a conference in Myanmar last year when he was struck by a statistic he heard from Michael Kelly, director of market development and deputy managing director for the World LPG Association (WLPGA): Each year, 4.3 million people die from indoor air pollution-caused illness — more than deaths from malaria, HIV/AIDS, and tuberculosis combined. Indoor smoke from solid fuels is the 10th leading cause of avoidable deaths worldwide. This entirely preventable problem disproportionately affects women and children—the ones collecting, cooking with, and breathing in solid fuels. Using propane can play a significant role in combatting this staggering statistic. It was fortuitous timing for both men. In a country where more than 80% of the 55 million residents still burn firewood…

  • Tier 4, Farm Incentives Move Irrigation from Diesel to Propane

Tier 4 emission standards are now fully implemented by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and put the most stringent restrictions yet on diesel engines that require deep reductions in pollutants and particulate matter. With Tier 3 diesel engines now illegal, there are many options involving propane that allow farmers to cost-effectively continue with important farm processes such as irrigation. The Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) started to work with engine manufacturers nine years ago as it became clear Tier 4 emission standards would make diesel engines much more expensive. From dual-fuel systems to engines designed and optimized for industrial applications, PERC has helped fund research and development involving several companies to help ensure alternatives to the Tier 4 diesel engine would be available in…

  • State Propane Gas Associations Rank Growing Gallons and Workforce Development As Top Priority in 2019

As 2018 drew to a close, BPN reached out to state propane executives to discuss their plans for 2019. While addressing lost revenue and Volkswagen Settlement opportunities were high on many 2018 priority lists, growing gallons and workforce development were two of the highest priorities in many states for 2019. Among the common themes reported by state executives were the following: a colder winter was helpful to the industry after two previous warm winters and the polar vortex that resulted in huge supply shortages in early 2014; state associations made necessary adjustments in 2018 budgets caused by the loss of dues’ revenue; and gaining results from the Volkswagen Settlement has been a slow process. Growing Gallons Pennsylvania is typical of many states in planning to…

  • Sustainable Fleet Webinar: Propane as a Transportation Fuel Deployment Considerations, Best Practices & Best Applications

The Propane Education Research Council (PERC), along with leading propane vehicle suppliers and fleets that have successfully deployed propane autogas as a clean, sustainable transportation fuel are hosting a FREE webinar, Wednesday, January 23, 2018 from 1:00-2:00 p.m. CST. PERC will provide a general overview of propane as an economical, environmentally-sustainable transportation fuel. Several fleets from different sectors including law enforcement, school bus, paratransit, tow truck/wrecker industry, and others will share their stories, experiences, and lessons learned regarding why they chose to upgrade to clean, abundant American propane. There will be an opportunity to ask questions, get myths dispelled and address concerns with PERC and the fleets and suppliers (ICOM Alternative Fuel Systems, Alliance AutoGas and ROUSH CleanTech) participating. To register for this free webinar…

  • Newly Discovered Deep-Sea Microbes Gobble GHGs, Oil, Prevent Greenhouse Gas Release

Scientists at the University of Texas at Austin’s Marine Science Institute have discovered nearly two dozen types of microbes, many of which use hydrocarbons such as methane and butane as energy sources to survive and grow, meaning the newly identified bacteria might be helping to limit the concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere and might one day be useful for cleaning up oil spills. In a paper published in Nature Communications, researchers documented extensive diversity in the microbial communities living in the extremely hot, deep-sea sediments in the Guaymas Basin in the Gulf of California. The team uncovered new microbial species that are so genetically different from those that have been previously studied that they represent new branches in the tree of life….

  • State Propane Gas Associations, Retailers Aid in Disaster Relief

The wildfires and hurricanes recently seen in different parts of the country have reminded propane marketers and consumers alike that the best time to get ready for a disaster is before it happens. To make that task easier, the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) offers a number of resources that provide information and best practices for preparing for and responding to an emergency. Resources are available tailored to consumers, marketers, and first responders. Among these resources are materials available in print or electronic format, an upcoming conference focused on safety and training, and a presentation that reminds marketers about the dangers of complacency. “We know how important this is,” Stuart Flatow, vice president of safety and training at PERC, told BPN. “It seems natural…

  • Get Exclusive Discounts and Best-in-Class Services With NPGA’s Affinity Partners

When propane marketers utilize business products and services from NPGA Affinity Program Providers, they are working with vendors that have been vetted by industry members and endorsed by the National Propane Gas Association (NPGA). As a page that is to be included in the next edition of the NPGA Membership Directory puts it, these providers offer “Products and Services Chosen Especially for Propane Companies.” Christine Hutcherson, director of member services at NPGA, says these vendors offer NPGA members exclusive discounts and benefits. They also have a real understanding of the industry and its members’ needs. By choosing these vendors, she adds, association members can save both time and money. “We vet all these programs,” Hutcherson told BPN. “We take the time and effort comparing different…

With the 116th Congress taking office this month, National Propane Gas Association (NPGA) leaders have a lot of work to do to introduce the propane industry and its many concerns to 100 new members of Congress. With three new Democrats and six new Republicans in the Senate and 60 new Democrats and 31 new Republicans in the House of Representatives, NPGA leaders would like to meet with the offices of all new members with key propane interests prior to Propane Days in June 2019. The majority in the House has shifted to the Democrats and the new Congress is the most racially diverse and has the most females in history.
