  • Bobtail Requalification Extension Update

    The National Propane Gas Association (NPGA) received formal clarification on July 8, 2016 from the Pipeline & Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) regarding several key aspects of the final rule to extend the hydrostatic pressure test requalification period from 5 to 10 years for certain types of bobtails. The formal letter from PHMSA is a valid correction to the final rule until PHMSA publishes the correction in the Code of Federal Regulations. PHMSA communicated the corrections to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), as well. Clarifications from PHMSA include that the effective date of the final rule is July 5, 2016.   • Bobtail Rodeo Winners Announced

    The West Virginia Propane Gas Association held its bi-annual bobtail rodeo on June 21, 2016 at Citizens Fire Department, Charles Town, WV. It is the longest running bobtail rodeo in the propane industry. Eight propane bobtail drivers participated in the 3-part competition including Josh Allen, Roach Energy; Ron DeVall, Hagedorn's Inc.; David Shover, Blue Flame Inc.; Chris Silkworth, Thompsons Gas; Kenny Swink Jr., Blue Flame Inc.; Scott Swink, Blue Flame Inc.; Bill Walker, AmeriGas; and Kevin Watson, Hagedorn's Inc. The winners included Ron DeVall, Hagedorn's Inc., who took 1st Place, Chris Silkworth, Thompsons Gas was awarded 2nd Place, and the 3rd Place winner was Kenny Swink, Jr., of Blue Flame Inc.   • New Propane.com Golf Webpage Highlights Benefits of Propane-Powered Golf Course Equipment

  • S2G Bobtail: Positive Reviews With Some Challenges

    Freightliner unveiled its S2G propane-fueled bobtail in 2012, making it possible for propane marketers to “run their fleet on the fuel they sell.” The bobtail filled a void that had existed since GM phased out production of its 8.1L engine for the medium-duty truck market at the end of calendar year 2009. Drivers have been delivering fuel since 2013 in the vehicle, which features an Allison 2000 series transmission and a fueling system from CleanFUEL USA. Its 8-liter, 339-hp purpose-built engine is supplied by Powertrain Integration (Madison Heights, Mich.). The engine provides 495 ft-lb of torque at 3100 rpm.
