Feature ArticlesIn 2013, Sharp Energy (Georgetown, Del.) entered the autogas market with one private fueling station serving 13 vehicles. Today, the propane subsidiary of Chesapeake Utilities Corp. has 53 stations in Delaware, Florida, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. These include 37 private stations and 16 public stations that serve 1300 vehicles from multiple fleets that are Sharp customers. As a partner of Alliance AutoGas since 2012, Sharp Energy is part of a national network of companies that help fleets transition to propane autogas. These companies deliver vehicle conversions; onsite fueling infrastructure; fuel supply; safety and operational training; and ongoing technical support. “Since 2013 we have been building out the market for autogas,” Eric Mays, director of sales and marketing with Sharp Energy, tells BPN. “We are continuing...

Touch-A-Truck Events: Provide Ways To Engage With Community
Two or three times a year for more than five years, Ciardelli Fuel Co. (Milford, N.H.) has parked one of its bobtails alongside work trucks from as many as 30 other companies and allowed children and parents to climb into the bobtail and see how it works. At these Touch-A-Truck and similar events, the bobtail was accompanied by two of the company’s crew members, who pointed out the different parts of the bobtail and explained what they do. As this was written, Ciardelli Fuel Co. had just been at two Touch-A-Truck events in August and was preparing to participate in a similar event in September. That event, Wheels & Wings at the airport in Nashua, N.H., includes airplanes and helicopters in addition to trucks. The... -

Lessons Learned: Adopt New Technology, Continue To Improve
While many people who operate fleets see electronic driver logs (EDLs) as a burden, Lon Holloway sees EDLs as tools that help increase profitability. An EDL, he explains, gives him data that helps him determine when the truck needs preventive maintenance. That, in turn, helps him avoid the costs of breakdowns and unplanned repairs. “If you’re not using all or most of the new technologies, you’re leaving money on the table,” he says. “You don’t have a lot of control over the cost of propane, but you have many ways you can control your expenses. If you do a real good job of that, you will make money.” Holloway’s embrace of new technology and continuous improvement has served him well during a propane industry career... -

DRAMATIC Emission Reductions From Propane Autogas School Buses
Emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx), one of the biggest challenges to air quality in the United States, are as much as 96% lower when a school bus is fueled by propane autogas rather than diesel. That’s just one of the findings in a study recently published by West Virginia University’s Center for Alternative Fuels Engines and Emissions (CAFEE). Reduction of NOx is important because these emissions are regulated by the federal government and are a predominant non-attainment concern in many areas, the author of the study adds. “NOx is one of the primary precursors to ground-level ozone, or smog,” Ross Ryskamp, associate director, testing and development, with CAFEE, tells BPN. “The whole nation is making a big push to bring down NOx emissions from vehicles.”... -

Propane Showcased During “National Clean Energy Week” As Clean American Energy
(September 23, 2019) — Activities are being held across the country through the end of September to help showcase propane as a clean, eco-friendly fuel in the eyes of policymakers. The activities will culminate during National Clean Energy Week (NCEW), with state and national policymakers meeting in Washington, D.C., to discuss clean energy solutions. For the first time, the National Propane Gas Association (NPGA) is a sponsor of NCEW 2019. The association has been organizing activities around the event and is encouraging others in the industry to coordinate activities with NPGA. During an all-day policy symposium that is among the events to be held in Washington, NPGA’s senior vice president of advocacy and technical services, Michael Caldarera, will be a featured speaker. Participation in the... -

Adapting To The Changing World: Never Stop Learning
(August 21, 2019) — Four years ago, after having operated a propane company for some 35 years, Alan Friedman went back to school. He had been running the company since around 1980, when he was just 16 years old and still in high school. Despite having to learn everything on the job, he was accepted to the Harvard Business School Owner/President Management (OPM) program in 2015. “I needed to reinvent myself and the company in a changing world,” Friedman says. “I wasn’t tech-savvy and I felt I had to do something to take the company in a new direction and keep it going. The world was changing; I had been running the company for 30-plus years and I had to adapt to keep up with... -

One Recipe For Success: Study Whatever Interests You
Years ago, when William (Bill) Young was asked by a manager why he was resigning a job, he answered, “I no longer whistled while driving to work in the morning.” That has been a theme throughout his long career in the propane industry and even in his college days: he has dedicated his time to conquering challenging projects and having fun while doing it. Young’s career in the propane industry started with a summer job painting cylinders while in college. A week after being hired, and after answering “yes” when asked if he could do mechanical work, he completed his first propane conversion on a lift truck. As the end of summer neared, his employer asked if he would consider staying on and going to... -

Tech Recruitment Programs Growing Gallons, Propane Workforce
Sharp Energy (Georgetown, Del.) has developed a program that will give students a close-up look at the workday of a propane service technician. The program also will give the company a chance to recruit, mentor, and perhaps hire a new generation of techs. A subsidiary of Chesapeake Utilities Corp., Sharp Energy distributes propane in Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. It is also a partner of Alliance AutoGas. In this new program, the company is partnering with a local high school and two community colleges: Sussex Tech High School (Georgetown, Del.), Delaware Technical and Community College (Dover, Del.), and Wor-Wic Community College (Salisbury, Md.). In a part of the program that will be offered for the first time this summer, students will work full time, shadowing... -

Advocacy, Networking, and Much More in D.C.
(July 11, 2019) — For a group of industry delegates from New England, Propane Days 2019 opened with a full day of visits to legislators’ offices and closed with a member of Congress coming to visit them. Propane Days, the National Propane Gas Association’s (NPGA) annual event in Washington, D.C., draws members to meet with legislators and their staffs. This year, nearly 250 registered attendees participated. Among them were eight members of the Propane Gas Association of New England (PGANE) who formed a delegation representing Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. During the first day of the event, the group visited the offices of four senators and three representatives. Six other PGANE members formed a delegation representing Connecticut and visited the offices of the two senators...
