Meet Whitney O’Toole, Telemetry Manager at AmeriGas

How did you get your start in the propane industry? 

Over 20 years ago, I was managing a Dunkin’ Donuts/Baskin Robbins when a long-time customer asked me what it would take to steal me away and go work for him. It was flattering, but also terrifying as my only experience with propane was the occasional BBQs I would attend at friends and family gatherings. 

What major shifts over the years have had the biggest impact on the industry, and what positive changes have you seen come from them? 

Since I lead AmeriGas’ telemetry program, one of the biggest shifts I have seen in our industry is the introduction and implementation of tank monitoring systems. The propane industry’s willingness to embrace remote monitoring technology has driven substantial improvements in operational productivity while significantly reducing delivery costs. 

Have there been any industry challenges you’ve encountered in your career that changed how you approach your role? 

For many years, women were underrepresented in executive and senior operational roles within our industry. While women were present in administrative or support functions, it was less common to see them in leadership positions such as operations management, technical roles or executive leadership. The Women in Propane Council helped me expand my leadership development, provide mentorship opportunities and create visibility for not only me but for women across the industry. I know, I know … shameful plug … but it’s all true. 

Who has been the strongest influence in your career to date? 

I actively listen and learn from two of my favorite speakers and motivational artists: Gary Vaynerchuk and Simon Sinek. Simon is a captivating communicator and instructor on purpose-driven leadership and “start with the why”. Gary is one of those go-getter, no-BS motivators that just gets you excited to change the world. 

What advice would you give someone just coming into the industry? 

Join the National Propane Gas Association and get involved. Our industry is filled with some of the most talented, experienced and giving people within our community. Above all else we want our industry to be successful and that means everyone in it. 

What does the Women in Propane community mean to you, and how has it influenced your experience in the industry? 

What can I say… the Women in Propane community has been a keystone in my success and development over the years. I have met and become fast friends with some of the greatest people I will ever know in my lifetime. 

What do you think would surprise someone about the job you do? 

Pretty much everyone I know who first finds out I work in the propane industry are completely shocked. It’s not a very well-known industry — other than the occasional cartoon adaptation — and for some reason I apparently don’t look like a “propane” person. I wear it as a badge of honor, though — if the world only knew what they were missing. 

What motivates you to keep growing in your career? 

What motivates me the most is the opportunity to contribute to the long-term success of both my company and the propane industry as a whole. Our success is deeply connected — we are partners in this industry for the long haul. When we strengthen the industry, we strengthen our companies and create opportunities for everyone to grow and succeed. 

What advice would you give to women who are considering a career in the propane industry but may not see a clear path forward yet? 

I would encourage women to stay curious and not be discouraged if the path forward isn’t immediately clear. The propane industry is full of opportunities across many areas. By asking questions, building strong relationships and continuing to learn, you can create your own path and make a real impact. 

If you had an unexpected day off, how would you spend it? 

If I had an unexpected day off, I would probably spend it in the sun! A half day at the local animal shelter and then finish it off at the gun range. Good vibes, unconditional love and the absolute best stress relief!
