Meet Daniel Quiroga Sacramento, Sales Manager at Metsa Tanks
The sales manager talks what keeps him motivated & how he maintains a work-life balance
How did you get your start in the propane industry?
I had just finished my college degree in mechanical engineering administration when I heard about an opportunity at Metsa as a sales representative. It immediately caught my attention, and that was the beginning of my career in the propane industry.
What do you think would surprise someone about the job you do?
Even though we are based in Monterrey, Mexico, we spend a significant amount of time in the U.S. and Canada visiting customers. I’ve been at Metsa for 11 years, and during that time I’ve boarded more than 650 flights in my career.
How would you advise someone new to the industry?
You can read all the standards, regulations and theories related to our industry, but the most valuable knowledge comes from getting out there and talking to people in the industry. Ask how things work, what challenges they face and how they think things could work better.
Who has been the strongest influence in your career?
I would say both my previous boss and my current boss, Robert Kenney, our CEO. However, I have also learned a lot from the people in this industry. Many of them have helped me grow into the position I’m in today, and I’m happy to now call many of them friends.
How would you describe your leadership style, and how do you believe it contributes to the success of your team and organization?
I would describe my leadership style as results-driven, hands-on and people-focused. I’m always open to new ideas, and I like to support my team not only professionally, but personally as well. I care about my team, and my approach has always been — and will continue to be — honest and fair.
What or who motivates you?
My family. Being able to provide for my family, watch my children grow and create meaningful experiences together is truly priceless. Beyond that, I’ve always enjoyed helping others, and my job gives me the opportunity to offer solutions and add value to our customers’ supply. Knowing that what I do matters and has a positive impact on our industry motivates me as well.
What’s your funniest or favorite work memory?
Here’s a funny one, although maybe not my favorite. During a trip to Jackson Hole for the Rocky Mountain Propane Association, we went snowmobiling for the first time. Apparently, we broke the record for the most crashes in one trip. After that, everyone knew who we were, so I guess it was worth it.
How do you maintain a healthy work-life balance while pursuing your goals and ambitions within the environment of the propane business?
To be honest, it’s something I’m still working on. The best thing that works for me is keeping a well-organized calendar where I can see both my work and personal appointments and meetings. I also start every week by making a to-do list and setting priorities.
What’s the best compliment you’ve ever received?
Being recognized as part of the propane industry’s 30 Under 30 program meant a lot to me. Beyond that, my customers often tell me how responsive I am to their requests and how much they appreciate that I listen to their suggestions in order to improve our products, processes and service.
How would you spend an unexpected day off?
Probably playing a sport with friends in the morning, preferably basketball or padel. Then I’d have lunch with my family and take my kids to the park. At night, I’d watch a movie with my wife and order sushi or pizza. Although, if I’m being completely honest, it would probably involve having a few beers and watching a basketball or football game.
