The American Petroleum Institute (API; Washington, D.C.) released the following statement Sept. 24 in response to California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s executive order banning the sale of new gasoline and diesel-powered passenger cars in the state by 2035.

“This is a profoundly counterproductive plan that will deny hardworking Californians the choice to buy a car that suits their needs and budget," said Frank Macchiarola, API senior vice president of policy, economics, and regulatory affairs. “The solutions to today’s challenges will not be born out of rhetoric-laden bans like this but rather the product of innovation and thoughtful policymaking. What we saw from the governor today [Sept. 24] is merely a plan to increase the cost of living in California.”

API represents all segments of America’s oil and natural gas industry. Its more than 600 members produce, process, and distribute most of the nation’s energy. The industry supports more than 10 million U.S. jobs and is backed by a growing grassroots movement of millions of Americans.
