Canada’s primary underground propane inventories increased by 14.2% In August to begin September at 2336.6 Mcm, the equivalent of 14.7 MMbbl, according to the Canada Energy Regulator (CER). The total represented a good-sized month-to-month gain of 290.0 Mcm. Compared to a year earlier, stocks were up markedly, with an additional 1042.8 Mcm, or 80.6%, on hand.

Propane storages in the West began September at 1477.4 Mcm, which corresponds to 9.3 MMbbl, the agency reported. During August, volumes increased by 191.9 Mcm, or 14.9%, and ended 641.8 Mcm, or 76.8%, greater than a year earlier. In the East, supplies started September at 859.2 Mcm, commensurate with 5.4 MMbbl. This advance put propane 98.1 Mcm, or 12.9%, higher for the month, and a significant increase of 401.0 Mcm, or 87.5%, above a year prior.

Canadian butane inventories stood at 1421.8 Mcm at the beginning of September, for a gain of 146.3 Mcm, or 11.5%, from a month earlier. Once again, a year-over-year comparison found current volumes continue to surpass the year-over-year total. Butane volumes have grown by 369.6 Mcm, or 35.1%. Western butane supplies, at 910.8 Mcm, were 79.3 Mcm, or 9.5%, greater than the previous month, and 303.8 Mcm, or 50.0% higher than last year. Eastern butane, at 511.1 Mcm, added 67.1 Mcm, or 15.1%, month over month, and totaled 66.0 Mcm, or 14.8%, more than a year earlier.
